AI and risk mandates

We treat credit decisions as high-risk AI, and we govern them that way.

Our AI supports the assessment of individuals’ creditworthiness, a use treated as high-risk under the EU AI Act. We apply our strongest controls to it and give lenders the evidence they need for their own model risk management, including under PRA SS1/23.

The UK’s five AI principles, in practice

Safety, security, robustnessModels validated before release, pinned in production, monitored, and protected against prompt injection
Transparency, explainabilityEvery recommendation shows its main factors and the policy rules applied
FairnessOutcomes tested for unfair differences between groups, before release and monthly
Accountability, governanceA named owner, documented risk assessments, change control and Board oversight
Contestability, redressUnderwriters can override any recommendation; customers can be routed to fully human underwriting

What our AI will never do

  • Make fully automated lending decisions without meaningful human review
  • Use protected characteristics, or obvious proxies for them, to influence recommendations unfairly
  • Act automatically on signs that a customer may be vulnerable
  • Manipulate or deceive customers
  • Carry out biometric identification

When something goes wrong

  1. Kill switch: clients can switch to underwriting without AI at once
  2. Roll back to the last validated model version
  3. Identify every affected application from the decision logs
  4. Notify affected clients within 24 hours
  5. Learn: root cause analysis and a post-incident report within 10 working days
